Playoffs? Since 1996, this Cowboys HC has had the most playoff success

I’m sure everyone guessed Jason Garrett right? Yep, since 1996, the last year Barry Switzer won a playoff game in Dallas, Jason Garrett has the most playoff wins here as a head coach with TWO!

Here’s a little perspective: The Dallas Cowboys all time playoff record is 36-31, which even after our playoff win drought of the last three decades, we remain 5th in NFL playoff wins behind the niners, packers, patriots and steelers.

Tom Landry was 20-16 in the playoffs in his 29 years as Cowboys HC. In the 35 years of the Jerry Jones era, the Cowboys playoff record is 16-15. Jimmy and Barry Switzer won 12 of those playoff wins in the Jerry era in the first 7 years of Jerry’s ownership. Let that marinate.

In the 35 years Jerry Jones has owned the Dallas Cowboys he has hired 8 head coaches. I would argue only three of them – Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcells and maybe Mike McCarthy would ever be considered in the top echelon of NFL head coaching talent. In fact of those 3, only Jimmy won more than one playoff game here in Dallas.

Cowboys head coaches just don’t win many playoff games here since 1996. Our playoff record with the six head coaches who followed Barry Switzer is 4-10.

Jimmy was 9-4 in the playoffs as a HC, was 7-1 in the playoffs here, 2-3 in Miami. Parcells was 11-8 in the playoffs, but was 0-2 in Dallas. McCarthy is 11-11 in the playoffs, but he’s 1-3 here. I realize Barry Switzer had a 5-2 playoff record here but by the time he was HC here, he was at the end of his career and no other NFL team would have hired him.

So when we as Cowboys fans consider who Jerry Jones hires as his next HC, we must somehow pray that coach is better than Jason Garrett who of all the HCs Jerry has hired since 1996, Garrett has the most playoff wins here with a whopping TWO.
