Trey Lance Upon Further Review

I went back and took a look at Lance’s career at North Dakota, and I have to say I’m impressed. One thing to keep in mind is his age, and the fact that he’s still maturing technically speaking. Some of us can take even longer than 25 years to mature (looks around). I’m looking at this guy play, and he really does jump off the screen. I happen to think he fits our system well and believe there is still much hope for this player. I try not to knee-jerk when forming an opinion. To make a proper evaluation, you have to think it through and look at what’s available. The guy has talent, which is evident in his reel.

Personally, I think it’s possible there could be times when he plays this year. I also predict a large portion of our fans will eventually make this into some sort of controversy. Not my intention.

Jazzcat was asking if anyone had been to the 9ers fan board to see what they thought about trading Lance to the Cowboys. I took the liberty of scoping that out.

Many San Fran fans are upset that if Purdy gets hurt, they don’t really have an NFL-caliber QB to drive their offense. It’s interesting. Over there, fans are ruing the trade. Over here, fans are also ruing the trade. It’s difficult to fathom that both camps could be correct.

If you haven’t already, take another peak at Lance’s highlight video. I realize it’s highlights. But I also took a peep at his college stat line. I have never seen anything like this before. He apparently threw for 30 TDs, and 1 measly INT.

Considering 2020 was a pandemic year, that’s is equivalent to last year being his rookie year in which he got injured. So, this would be like most QBs rookie years. I’m not making excuses for him there. That’s a fact. He’s also only 23-years old. I’m not the only one who came to this conclusion.

For the record, I’m a big fan of Cooper Rush. I still believe he is underappreciated and most likely even underrated. He taught me a lesson last year: to be patient with these guys who are learning the most difficult position in sports.

Another interesting aspect, from what I could glean, Lance was actively trying to get out of San Fran for some reason. It could be that there was too much competition at camp. It could be his relationship with coaches and the emergence of Purdy, who I happen to think is somewhat overrated. I also think it’s only a matter of time before teams figure Purdy out. Could it be that Lance intentionally underperformed in Frisco in order to be traded? It’s not like he held the cards and had a say in where he was traded, but he just happened to be traded to a team that also has a legit QB. This could have also been about future contracts for both teams. On one hand, San Fran believes they want to extend Purdy eventually. His draft status makes that more urgent since he’s not on a 5 year deal.

I can’t blame Lance for being perturbed about being written off by Purdy for the staff there. I just sense Purdy will eventually be brought down to Earth. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong. Just my gut.

The other thing is, San Fran is super expensive and the overall culture and environment can be off-putting even for the most tolerant among us. The same thing is happening in Austin, so I can relate with the possibility of that sentiment.

Being surrounded by masses of brain-washed young folks who’ve been fooled into taking on their so-called authentic [new] identities, it doesn’t really make for a great environment. For example, I went to the grocery store yesterday, got in line, immediately the cashier pretends I’m a therapist and starts whining how offended they were over someone in line before me giving them a Bible. For a group that cries about inclusion and fairness, they sure do have centric perspectives, and have no issues cancelling others for their identities even if that person likely had good intentions. I’m rarely offended by others’ beliefs. Lots of people believe in ideologies that aren’t true. I’m generally not put off by that. I just find it ironic how they venomous and insistent they are about defining the identities of others’. To me, that’s the height of bigotry and willful ignorance and I’d want the heck out too.

Anyway, I’m not going to be surprised when Lance balls out in Dallas. At first, I questioned Jerry’s sanity, but this is looking more and more like a well-advised and potentially brilliant move.
