The future of LG. The candidates on the roster

At some point in the near future we will be moving Tyler Smith the LT permanently. What happens with this move has been on every Cowboys fans minds since the offseason. Alot of clamoring (rightfully) about drafting a young OG to slide in to that spot eventually. We sorta did with Richards, but in the 5th round, it was really just a dart. We also added some better than usually OL prospects as UDFA’s (Bass and Bostic). Although Bostic is likely an OT only. This camp and preseason has given fans some hope that the players added during the draft may actually have a chance at being a quality starter at the LG spot. Lets have a discussion about the two possibilities (Richards and Bass) that have stood out so far

For guards, and LG is expected to block a 3T on most downs and help protect a QB’s blind side with the LT. Both Richards and Bass have plus athleticism for the position, and experience pass protecting against blindside rushers in college. I think if you are really looking to fortify your pass pro, both are quality candidates

Asim Richards: Haven’t noticed him at OG, but he has looked very good at LT. He could also have a future here as a swing OT. Good length (34 inch arms), very strong lower body. He needs alot more upper body strength to play LG in the NFL. If he does add alot more upper body strength, I could see him being a real standout in the 2024 camp

TJ Bass: Very strong preseason from him. Played extensively at both LG and LT in college, finishing his career at LT. Definitely OG only in the NFL due to length. However 32 inch arms isnt below the threshold for OG’s. Hand usage is his real calling card. Not super athletic, but good enough at LG and his experience at LT in the Pac 10 could help with more athletic 3t’s.
