Since I’ve been a Cowboys fan a really long time, I enjoy looking at the history of the series with a team on our schedule. New Orleans is not that far from Dallas so if there is ever a realignment of divisions, it would make some sense to put Dallas and NO together. That is not likely to happen anytime soon I’m sure.
Here‘s some basic history between these two teams:
ALL TIME RECORD VS SAINTS: Cowboys lead all time series 18-13.
- This has been a streaky series. Cowboys won the first 7 games and the saints won 6 in a row in the early 2000s.
- Since 1998, the saints are 8-4 against Dallas.
- The Saints were an NFL expansion team that entered the league in 1967, only 7 years after the Cowboys entrance in 1960.
- The Cowboys won the first Cowboys-Saints matchup 14-10 on Oct. 15, 1967, played at the Cotton Bowl.
- The Cowboys won the last matchup in 2021 played in NO, 27-17.
- The Saints first beat the Cowboys in 1971 in a huge upset 24-14, the year the Cowboys won their first SB. The QB for the Saints that day was the great Archie Manning who scored two running TDs. Roger Staubach threw 2 TDs that day, one to HOFer Bob Hayes.
- The Saints original stadium was the old Tulane Stadium which they shared with the Tulane University team.
- Interestingly, the Cowboys first and second SB wins were both in New Orleans. SB VI was won in Tulane Stadium and SB XII was won the in the new (at the time) Superdome.
- The worst loss we ever had to the Saints was in Jimmy’s first season on the opening game in 1989. The Cowboys were shutout 28-0 in the first of 15 losses that really rough year.
SOME OTHER FUN TIDBITS
- Former Saints HC Sean Payton served on Bill Parcells staff for 3 seasons, 2003-2005 as Assistant HC and QBs coach.
- Probably the best former Saints player who also played for Dallas was the great DL Leroi Glover, who played here 4 seasons after logging 5 seasons for the Saints.
- Three former Cowboys QBs also once played for the Saints: Wade Wilson, Steve Walsh and Andy Dalton.
- Surprisingly, the Cowboys and the Saints have never played each other in the playoffs.
Should be a fun game Sunday and I expect the Cowboys to ultimately prevail.
Any other Cowboys-Saints history to share?
