The Wizard of AT&T: Hubris, Nepotism, & Incompetence Oh My!

There have been some great discussions of late, debating if Jerry will ever surrender control of football operations to an actual football expert (i.e., GM). And there have been equally great debates if Stephen might consider hiring a legitimate NFL GM once Jerry is gone, assuming he outlives Jerry. Under the banner of hope, I have listed the scenarios that would bring hope back to those of us that have loved the Cowboys our entire life. They are listed in no particular order and note that these are all far fetched scenarios.

  1. Charlette Jones is the only one I think I has half a brain and a shred of decency. If the franchise ever falls into her hands, I have hope she would hire a GM and let them do their job without micromanagement. Unfortunately, Charlette ending up as the top decision maker seems like a long-shot but I have a sliver of hope.
  2. Stephen Jones takes over after Jerry passes and hires a GM. I’ve not seen anything from Stephen to indicate he would do anything different than his dad. And he seems to be full of the same hubris as Jerry, a chip off the old block. The other fear I have if Stephen hired a real GM is that he would micromanage and undermine the GM’s authority.
  3. Jerry stops his defiant insistence on making every football decision and hires a GM. IMO, Jerry would have to receive a blow to the head in an accident to induce the type of behavior required to put winning above his own disgusting ego. I literally never see this happening, ever. Jerry’s pattern has been the hotter the heat, the more defiant he becomes and the offseason is a prime example. I just don’t think Jerry can be shamed into hiring a GM even as we continue our death spiral this season.
  4. The NFL steps in and removes the franchise from Jerry and the Jones family. Jerry Richardson and Daniel Snyder are two great examples of owners so abhorrent in their behavior, policies, and actions that the NFL (the other owners) actually forced them to sell their teams. Anyone following the Cowboys the past 30+ years have seen the Jerry stories about all kinds of behavior similar to Richardson & Snyder. I’m confident Jerry has done most of the same things that cost the other owners their franchises but Jerry makes too much money for the NFL for them to remove him from ownership. And sadly, that is what makes it so depressing to be a Cowboy fan.

For those who will say "so find another team", you don’t understand what it’s been like to live through the amazing Landry years with two championships as well as the Jimmy Johnson-built 3x championship years only to be run in the ground by a fool for three decades and not a divisional playoff win to show for it. I have loved the Cowboys since my dad and my older brother introduced me to the team as a little kid and I will always be a fan no matter what horrors the Jones family continues to bring on this franchise.

Hope is so important in life and in sports. It inspires and it produces better effort from players, coaches, and teams. The candle of hope in Dallas has been flickering more faintly than ever as we approach the dreaded 30 year anniversary of our last div playoff win. As we approach this inevitable low point as a franchise with no idea how much lower we can go, just remember it never had to be this way. But hubris, nepotism, and incompetence are a deadly cocktail, distinguishing even the most fervent fan’s hopes.
